Jennifer Fong, a 31-year-old Senior Associate from international law firm Baker & McKenzie.Wong & Leow, devotes valuable time out of her busy schedule to volunteer with ISCOS. For the past three years, Jennifer has been consistently providing guidance and mentorship to children of ISCOS members under the Yellow Ribbon Fund-ISCOS Fairy Godparent Programme (FGP). During their meetings, Jennifer would plan activities according to what her mentees enjoy doing. At times, she and her mentees joined group activities with other mentees and mentors from the law firm.
Her positive influence and admirable passion towards helping her mentees had reaped results. Last year, one of Jennifer’s mentees received a Bursary Award for having done well in her school examinations.
Jennifer shared that she would like her mentees to be able to feel the concern of another person in their lives, even if it is only for a period of one year. She also hopes that through their interactions, her mentees could benefit from having new ideas or perspectives.
“I have never really interacted with children before the mentoring programme. The mentoring experience has given me some insights on their thoughts, and how we might be able to influence them positively.”
Jennifer’s commitment to volunteering is strongly driven by Winston Churchill’s quote which states,“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” She hopes that other volunteers can find similar inspiration in helping and improving the lives of others.
